CBD Edible Testing And Its Importance

September 12, 2021

After passing the Farm Bill of 2018, some countries and states legalized the utilization of cannabis and other cannabis-infused products. Since the legalization is currently expanding, it resulted in the abundance of CBD edibles in both online dispensaries and the physical market. Moreover, the government implemented CBD edible testing to ensure its safety.

Cannabis Components

Cannabis plants are composed of 120 components or cannabinoids. Scientists are uncertain of how cannabinoids really act on the body, but they have more data and research about these two—CBD and THC

Major Components Of Cannabis Plants

These two are the primary components of cannabis plants, but they have major differences.

  • Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)

THC is one of the primary components of CBD that holds the responsibility of causing psychoactive effects like hallucination upon consuming CBD edibles with high THC content. Aside from psychoactive effects, it has shown pain-killer and analgesic properties, but these findings need further experiments.

  • Cannabidiol (CBD)

CBD is a popular component of cannabis that is believed to manage health conditions. Due to its non-psychoactive effects, it is consumed for its health benefits. Epidiolex is the first oral solution that contains cannabidiol approved by the FDA.

Other Components

Aside from THC and CBD, there are lots of cannabis components that you should know.

  • Tetrahydrocannabinol Acid (THCA)

THCA usually exists in raw cannabis plants. When the plants undergo the process, when THCA is heated, it will convert into THC.

  • Cannabidiolic Acid (CBDA)

CBDA is the same as THCA; they are found in raw plants of cannabis. When the heating process occurs, CBDA will turn into CBD. This component of the cannabis plant has COX-2— a property that the body makes after having an injury.

  • Cannabigerol (CBG)

CBG is also a non-psychoactive compound. According to Acta Pharmaceutical, CBG exhibits to manage as a blood pressure regulator, aid sleeping problems, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory. It is also known as the “mother cannabinoid.”

  • Cannabinol (CBN)

CBN poses mild psychoactive effects to the users. It manufactures THC. Just like the other cannabis components, it also exhibits anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.

  • Cannabichromene (CBC)

CBC is one of the common cannabinoids. It can be found in the CBDA family, which is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties. Moreover, there are also studies that CBC is a possible tumor inhibitor, neuroprotectant, and pain reliever.

  • Terpenes

It is a component of cannabis responsible for the flavor and aroma of the plant, and scientists believe that it has something to do with the “entourage effect” of cannabis.

  • Flavonoids

Terpenes and flavonoids are common with the odor and taste of cannabis plants. The only thing that makes flavonoids differ from terpenes is it provides protection and color pigmentation.

  • Lipids

Lipid is a wax and non-water-solution fat that organically appears in the plant. The role of lipids is to preserve the quality of the plant. When the extraction occurs, the lipids are removed through winterization.

These components are identified on CBD edibles during CBD edible testing performed by scientists in the laboratory.

CBD Edibles Vs. Other Ways Of Consuming CBD

CBD edibles are another way of consuming cannabis. You can choose edibles of different kinds, like brownies, candies, gummies, and chocolates. Some consumers prefer CBD edibles because it is odorless, and you can consume them everywhere and anytime without doubts.

There are various ways of consuming cannabis. Aside from edibles, smoking or vaping is another way around for some users. However, they have a big difference when it comes to the product’s effectiveness. Edibles take longer to affect, and sometimes, it takes 45 minutes to 2 hours before you experience the results.

On the other hand, when you consume cannabis through smoking or vaping, the effects will take place right after using. In this comparison, the result in smoking cannabis is faster compared to CBD edibles.

The process takes place in the digestive system when you are consuming CBD edibles. Nevertheless, CBD edibles and smoking or vaping end up in the same metabolite that allows you to feel the effect of the product. Even though the effects of CBD edibles take longer to be felt, it also stays longer.

What Is CBD Edible Testing?

Since the legalization of cannabis influences many people, the government issued the testing of the products. States like California mandates the regulation in testing, including the contents of the following compounds; terpenes, residual solvents, mycotoxins, pesticides, metals, and THC. License is also needed for the companies that want to sell cannabis products.

Furthermore, the THC content should be less than 0.3 percent in every product. A third-party laboratory is needed to confirm the THC content in every product, and the companies are required to label the products with the proper amount of content.

Why Is CBD Edible Testing Important?

Some companies easily lie about the amount of the contents due to the consumption demand of cannabis in other parts of the world. To solve this issue, the government approved conducting testing before selling the products to the marketplace. The proper potency and labeling of the product are important because it can cause intoxication.

CBD Edible Testing Requirements

Recreational cannabis is administered at the state level, and each state has established its own rules for recreational cannabis edibles compliance testing. While regulations vary per state, most mandate THC and CBD potency testing, as well as pesticide residues, residual solvents, heavy metals, and microbiological impurity analysis.

The important thing is that the federal level imposes the THC level, which is not more than 0.3% of the content.

Cannabis consists of different compounds that can manage health conditions, but this statement needs further experiments and studies to confirm its benefits. CBD edibles can be of various kinds, such as brownies, candies, chocolates, and gummies.

Since the legalization of cannabis products, there are companies and online dispensaries that are not honest when stating the content of their products. To solve this kind of issue, the government implemented the testing for every product’s content with the help of third-party laboratories.

The laboratories conduct the tests to determine some contents like THC, CBD, terpenes, residual solvents, pesticides, and metals. In this case, the government can ensure the safety of the consumers.
